Yurei Ransomware: Go-Powered ChaCha20 & PowerShell Attacks

Yurei Ransomware: A New Wave of Cyber Threats

Since early September 2025, a cutting-edge ransomware called Yurei has stirred the cybersecurity scene. Crafted with Go programming and the ChaCha20 encryption algorithm, it was first seen in action when it breached a food production firm in Sri Lanka on September 5. Yurei stands out with its double-extortion tactic, encrypting files and extracting sensitive data for greater leverage. Not long after, it expanded its reach, hitting targets in India and Nigeria and quickly becoming infamous.

Uniquely, Yurei is built on the open-source Prince-Ransomware project, raising eyebrows about the hackers’ skill set. Yurei leverages Go’s concurrency to simultaneously scan and encrypt files using ChaCha20. It secures each file with a unique key and nonce, then encrypts these using ECIES with the attacker’s public key. Check Point researchers found that Yurei’s binary still has symbolic names from its origins, which also makes it easier for experts to dissect.

Challenges and Weaknesses of Yurei Exploitation

Though Yurei’s complex code poses challenges for some older antivirus programs, its incomplete execution offers a defense opportunity. Its failed PowerShell command often leaves victims with a blank desktop. More importantly, Yurei’s oversight in not deleting Volume Shadow Copies can be a godsend; it allows organizations to recover files without paying the ransom, even though the threat of leaked data persists.

Yurei’s swift encryption paired with data theft creates a potent mix for havoc. As it targets various industries, security teams should stay vigilant. Look for files marked with the .Yurei extension, set firm egress controls, and utilize VSS snapshots to counter potential impacts. In fortifying defenses, investing in top-notch threat intelligence solutions can be a game-changer in protecting against rising ransomware threats.
