Nike Targeted by WorldLeaks: Major Ransomware Attack Exposes Data
WorldLeaks Targets Nike in Alleged Ransomware Attack
Nike has reportedly been targeted by the WorldLeaks ransomware group, notorious for their data extortion operations. On January 22, they claimed responsibility for the breach on their darknet site, threatening to release stolen data on January 25. The post rapidly attracted attention, gathering over 400 views soon after its appearance.
Nike issued a brief statement acknowledging they are investigating “a possible cybersecurity event.” While the extent of the breach is unclear, cybersecurity insiders suspect it involves several terabytes of data, recalling past significant data theft incidents.
Concerns are rising over exposed sensitive information, which could include personal details of about 481,183 users, alongside employee and third-party credentials. Other potentially compromised data involve internal documents, customer records, and HR files. The impact on proprietary assets, like intellectual property, is still under review as the investigation continues.
Inside the WorldLeaks Operation
WorldLeaks, previously known as Hunters International, rebranded in January 2025. They focus strictly on data extortion, conducting rapid attacks that avoid encrypting files, thereby lessening detection risk. Their strategy includes a leak site, a ransom negotiation channel, a journalist forum for information distribution, and an affiliate program. Over 116 well-known companies, including Dell Technologies, have reportedly fallen victim to them.
WorldLeaks typically exploits vulnerable websites, phishing, and weak VPN security. Once in, they use sophisticated theft and exfiltration tactics. This event highlights the retail sector’s growing cybersecurity challenges, with experts suggesting stronger multi-factor authentications and better monitoring to stave off such breaches.
