SonicWall Lawsuit: Ransomware Breach Exposes 74 U.S. Banks

Marquis Takes Legal Action Against SonicWall: What Happened?

Marquis Software Solutions has taken a bold step by filing a lawsuit against SonicWall. They’re blaming SonicWall’s alleged negligence and misleading practices for a ransomware attack that disrupted 74 banks across the U.S.

The issue began on August 14, 2025, when hackers exploited vulnerabilities in a SonicWall firewall. This breach led to unauthorized access to sensitive data like Social Security numbers and financial details from Marquis’s partners.

Specializing in data analytics and compliance tools, Marquis serves over 700 financial institutions. Yet, they claim SonicWall failed in their duty to secure these institutions properly. What was thought to be a missed flaw was actually a deeper issue in the MySonicWall cloud service, following an API update in February 2025.

The Fallout and Legal Battle

This vulnerability allowed hackers to access backup files containing encrypted credentials and MFA codes. SonicWall acknowledged the breach weeks later, initially downplaying the extent before admitting all users were affected.

An investigation pointed to state-affiliated hackers as the culprits. Marquis insists their security was robust, with up-to-date firewalls and active MFA, but the breach still happened due to SonicWall’s lapse.

Marquis accuses SonicWall of ignoring crucial inquiries about the MFA compromise. The resulting damages include customer loss and reputational harm. With 36 class action lawsuits looming, Marquis seeks financial compensation and legal support.

This case underscores critical lessons in cybersecurity and the immense impact of tech security lapses in today’s business landscape.
