Cyberattacks Surge in Latin America and Africa

There’s been a notable increase in cyber threats globally, with ransomware attacks at the forefront, according to Check Point Research. Their December 2025 report highlights some worrying trends for organizations, particularly in Latin America and Africa. The global cyber landscape is seeing more activity, culminating in an average of 2,027 cyberattacks per organization per week. That’s a 1% increase from just the previous month and a 9% jump from December 2024.

Latin America has witnessed a substantial uptick in cyber activities. Companies there endure approximately 3,065 attacks weekly on average, marking an alarming 26% increase year-over-year, making it the region most affected. Meanwhile, the situation in Africa presents a shift rather than an overall decrease in threats. Nigeria is leading with an average of 4,622 weekly attacks per organization. Although there’s a mixed bag in the continent’s cyber trends, it’s clear that the cybercriminals are adapting and expanding their reach.

The targeted sectors in Africa, notably financial services, transportation, logistics, and government agencies, underline the critical need for robust defenses. As Hendrik de Bruin from Check Point Software states, “Attackers are targeting regions rapidly adopting digital technologies, where security measures aren’t always up to par.” Staying vigilant and adaptable is more crucial than ever for organizations to fend off these rising threats.
