Global Ransomware Attacks Surge in 2025, Manufacturing Targeted
Surge in Ransomware Attacks in 2025
There’s no sugarcoating it—2025 saw a staggering 32% increase in global ransomware incidents according to a Comparitech report. It was a tough year, particularly for manufacturers who bore the brunt of these cyberattacks. The total number shot up to 7,419, marking a significant rise from 5,631 in 2024. While 1,173 of these were confirmed by the affected organizations, the rest were claimed by hacker groups, often leaving victims in silence.
Manufacturing Takes a Hard Hit
Manufacturers faced a heavy storm, with attacks jumping 56%. This spike saw incidents rise from 937 in 2024 to 1,466 in 2025. The financial stakes were higher as well, with ransom demands soaring to almost $1.2 million on average, more than double the previous year. The legal sector wasn’t spared either, experiencing a 54% increase in attacks and a 60% hike in ransom demands, reaching $610,000 on average.
Geographic and Sector-Specific Data
The U.S. reported the most incidents, covering 51% of attacks, up by 33% from the prior year. Canada, Germany, the U.K., and France followed, each experiencing notable increases. South Korea saw a shocking 540% jump, largely due to a particular breach involving asset management firms.
Despite these grim numbers, the average ransom demand decreased to $1.04 million from $1.4 million in 2024. As ransomware groups shift focus toward lucrative targets like manufacturing, it’s crucial for all organizations to bolster their cybersecurity defenses.
