Google Alerts: Scattered Spider Ransomware Hits U.S. Insurance Firms

Last Updated: June 19, 2025By

A New Threat to the U.S. Insurance Sector

Google’s Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) recently sent out warnings of cyberattacks targeting the U.S. insurance industry, believed to be linked to the Scattered Spider ransomware gang. This marks a change for the group, which previously focused on retail, impacting companies like Marks & Spencer and Victoria’s Secret.

John Hultquist from GTIG emphasized the importance of vigilance in the insurance sector, warning about social engineering attacks that could target help desks and call centers. While specific companies remain unnamed, Erie Insurance did report a cyber incident, indicating ongoing efforts to restore services. Meanwhile, SC Media reported a similar attack on Scania’s corporate insurance division, though connections to Scattered Spider remain unconfirmed.

Cybercriminals Eye Insurance for Critical Data

Scattered Spider, or UNC3944, is known for their adaptability and financially motivated attacks across various industries. Their recent focus on insurance highlights the sector’s vulnerability due to its vast sensitive data, complex digital environments, and the critical nature of its operations. Nic Adams of 0rcus notes the group’s sector-focused strategy, often utilizing ransomware and data theft.

Fletcher Davis from BeyondTrust points out the susceptibility of insurance companies due to dependencies on large help desk operations and outsourced IT, making them prime targets for social engineering. The intricate and international setups of these firms further complicate the tightening of security measures.
