FBI and CISA Alert: Play Ransomware Threat Escalation

The FBI and CISA have issued an urgent alert regarding the alarming activities of a ransomware group known as Play. This group is currently threatening critical infrastructure across the U.S. and other global regions with its evolving and sophisticated tactics.

Originally surfacing in June 2022, Play has made waves, targeting a diverse range of companies in North America, South America, and Europe. By May 2025, the group’s operations had reportedly impacted around 900 organizations globally. Their focus includes exploiting vulnerabilities in widely used remote support software, such as SimpleHelp.

Exploited Vulnerabilities and Rising Concerns

Since early this year, Play associates have exploited weaknesses in SimpleHelp, a popular Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) tool. These vulnerabilities, highlighted by Horizon3.ai, include a severe path traversal flaw (CVE-2024-57727) that allows unauthorized file access. SimpleHelp has responded with security patches, urging immediate user updates.

Despite no confirmed link between Play and a recent DragonForce ransomware incident, the potential threat remains serious. Errol Weiss from the Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center emphasized the urgency for all sectors, especially those outside healthcare, to heed the advisory and take appropriate security measures.
