Ransomware Disrupts Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, Delays Cases
Ransomware Strikes Pennsylvania AG’s Office
Earlier this month, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office faced a significant setback due to a ransomware attack. Spotlight PA reports that the incident, initially labeled a “cyber incident,” has severely impacted the office’s operations. Prosecutors and staff members have been locked out of critical emails, files, and systems essential for ongoing legal proceedings.
The office has confirmed the breach involved an external party encrypting files to extract a ransom for service restoration. They vowed that no ransom had been paid as investigations are underway with law enforcement agencies. Ensuring the functioning of Pennsylvania’s highest legal authority is essential, as it oversees both civil and criminal cases across various courts.
Delays in Legal Proceedings
The attack has caused significant delays in court cases, particularly in Philadelphia and at the federal level, postponing proceedings until mid-September. The inability to access critical data has hampered interactions with witnesses and impeded legal processes such as discovery requests and filing responses.
Despite these hurdles, the office reassured that criminal prosecutions or civil actions would not be adversely affected solely due to the cyber assault. Attorneys have continued attending court sessions, and agents remain active in investigative tasks.
Rebuilding After the Cyberattack
Attorney General Dave Sunday highlighted the disrupted office environment post-attack, with email and website access recently restored. He commended the resilience of the staff and acknowledged the persistent efforts of IT teams and law enforcement to mitigate the attack’s effects.
State Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill is pushing for stronger cybersecurity reforms to combat increasing cyber threats, emphasizing enhanced protection and oversight across state agencies. Meanwhile, the public can reach out to the AG’s office by calling (717) 787-3391 or emailing info@attorneygeneral.gov.
