Nova Scotia Power Ransomware Attack: Major Data Breach Exposes Customers

Last Updated: May 27, 2025By

Nova Scotia Power’s Cybersecurity Challenges

Nova Scotia Power recently confirmed it was the target of a sophisticated ransomware attack, a threat cybersecurity experts had anticipated. In a bold move, the utility refused to comply with ransom demands, labeling the attack as “sophisticated.” This decision was not made lightly; it came after thorough consultations with law enforcement and careful examination of sanction laws.

The attack uncovered unauthorized access dating back to March 19, exposing critical customer information, including credit records, social insurance numbers, and banking details. The public was first alerted to this breach on April 25, after Nova Scotia Power grasped the extent of the incident.

Response and Expert Insights

David Shipley, CEO of Beauceron Security, praised the transparency of Nova Scotia Power’s disclosure but highlighted the need for earlier public communication. According to Shipley, such transparency is crucial, although it must be balanced with legal obligations that publicly traded companies face.

Shipley speculated that Nova Scotia Power might have identified the attackers as a sanctioned entity, explaining the decision not to pay the ransom—a move that could involve legal risks. He warned that stolen data often emerges on the dark web, a continual threat to both public utilities and critical infrastructure.

This incident is part of an unsettling trend in Nova Scotia, following the breach of the provincial government’s MOVEit platform, which compromised personal data of 100,000 individuals. Shipley warns that without regulatory action, risks of financial fraud and power disruptions could increase. In response, Nova Scotia Power is offering affected customers two years of free credit monitoring and urging vigilance against phishing attempts.
