Major Ransomware Attack Disrupts European Airport Operations

Last Updated: September 22, 2025By

Ransomware Attack Shakes Up European Air Travel

It’s a tough day for travelers across Europe as a major ransomware attack has caused chaos at some of the continent’s busiest airports, including Heathrow. The culprit? A cyber hit on Collins Aerospace, a crucial aviation service provider, which has left flights canceled and delayed. Authorities are actively investigating this disruptive breach.

The problem began on September 19, and its impact lingered into the next day, affecting operations at key locations like Berlin Brandenburg and Dublin airports. Staff were left scrambling with manual processes as the attack stalled the vital ARINC Multi-User System Environment (Muse). This system usually helps streamline functions like check-ins and baggage handling.

Collins Aerospace, along with its parent company RTX, has acknowledged the issue but remains tight-lipped on specifics. The European Union’s cybersecurity agency, ENISA, confirmed the ransomware as the cause but details are still sparse.

Authorities Move to Contain Cyber Threats

The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre is on the case, working alongside Collins and affected airports to gauge the full impact. They’re urging businesses to adopt stronger defenses and utilize the NCSC’s free cybersecurity tools.

Heathrow management has apologized and advised passengers to check flight statuses, suggesting earlier arrivals: three hours for long-hauls and two for shorter flights. While no group has claimed responsibility, some speculate a connection to the noted Scattered Spider hacking group, though links remain unverified.

Cybersecurity expert Jake Moore has emphasized how a single weak link in the supply chain can cripple international operations and called for stricter regulations to shield critical systems from these evolving threats.

Amidst rising ransomware attacks in 2025, authorities are keen on tightening their cybersecurity protocols to better confront such challenges.
