UK Cybercrime Leader Honored for LockBit Ransomware Disruption
Award for Key Figure in LockBit Disruption
A high-ranking UK official recently earned one of the nation’s prestigious accolades for his pivotal role in combatting cybercrime, particularly the significant takedown of the LockBit ransomware in 2024. Gavin Webb, of the National Crime Agency (NCA), was acclaimed in the 2026 New Year Honours list with the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This title is bestowed on individuals with remarkable achievements, situating Webb two tiers below a knighthood.
The NCA commended Webb’s leadership in Operation Cronos, an international collaboration targeting the dismantling of LockBit. Webb’s strategic coordination with various law enforcement agencies was instrumental in the operation’s success. Although not a tech expert, 51-year-old Webb, a trained police officer, played a crucial behind-the-scenes role, orchestrating the operation’s many facets. This complexity required effective leadership to unite multiple policing bodies.
The NCA underscored that LockBit was accountable for numerous ransomware incidents, inflicting severe financial damage. Thanks to the coordination of Webb, these attacks were disrupted, reflecting his essential role in the effort.
Additional NCA members also received honors, including Kay Taylor, who secured a CBE for her legal triumphs, and Fiona Nicolson, awarded an MBE for innovating economic crime methodologies. Beyond the NCA, individuals like Samantha De Souza and Capslock’s co-founders were recognized for their contributions to cyber initiatives and education inclusivity.
NCA Director General Graeme Biggar praised these officers, noting their honors as a testament to their public service commitment against serious crime. Webb and his colleagues’ endeavors exemplify the ongoing adaptations needed by law enforcement to tackle ever-evolving cyber threats while maintaining public safety.
