Erie Insurance Grapples with Cybersecurity Class-Action Lawsuit

Erie Insurance is facing more than just a tech hiccup; they’re now embroiled in a federal class-action lawsuit. This legal battle arises from charges that the company failed to thwart a ransomware attack, potentially compromising customer data. On June 15, an Illinois resident filed the lawsuit in federal court in Erie, citing that Erie Insurance’s negligence led to the leak of sensitive personal details. The company experienced a major network outage on June 8, which disrupted their entire operational framework and blocked customers from accessing their online accounts.

While Erie Insurance has admitted to this network outage, they haven’t confirmed a ransomware attack or data breach. The lawsuit claims a ransomware group gained access to their systems around June 7. However, the lawsuit lacks concrete proof of such a breach. Erie Insurance’s June 7 statement mentioned a “network outage impacting all systems,” but didn’t specify a cause.

Lawsuit Demands Accountability and Compensation

Raising the stakes, the lawsuit argues Erie Insurance neglected its duty to safeguard customer data. Alleging violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act, the plaintiffs assert the company’s lax cybersecurity measures are unfair business practices. Beyond negligence claims, the lawsuit accuses Erie Insurance of prioritizing profits over necessary security measures, continuing to collect premiums while skimping on data protection.

Initiated by Erie Insurance customer Neal Plascencia, the suit seeks class-action status and financial remuneration, including lifetime identity theft protection and complete transparency about the outage. Responding to the allegations, Erie Insurance spokesperson Matt Barkett stated, “We believe the allegations are baseless and will defend against them vigorously.”
