Akira Ransomware Targets Construction Firms in New Multi-Victim Attack

Last Updated: October 2, 2025By

New Targets Identified in Akira Ransomware Attack

The notorious Akira ransomware group has revealed a fresh list of eleven corporate victims in its latest cyber onslaught. None of these companies are industry giants, yet they share a common trait that made them appealing targets. True to their form, Akira is threatening to expose sensitive data unless ransom terms are agreed upon. Interestingly, there are no data samples yet on their leak site, hinting at possible negotiations behind the scenes.

Most of these businesses are in the United States, with additional victims in Canada and Switzerland. Cybernews is working to get comments from the affected organizations and will report back as responses come in.

Why Construction and Related Industries Are Targeted

The compromised data spans a wide spectrum of sensitive details: personal employee information, financial records, medical history, and even confidential contracts. Notably, the targeted firms operate in similar fields like construction and repair, making them attractive to hackers. Names like Burke Contracting, Tom Duffy Company, and Pawling reveal a focus on construction and repair services.

Construction companies store valuable client and financial information, making them juicy targets. Many of these businesses overlook cybersecurity, lacking basic practices like strong password management and email vigilance, which increases vulnerability. Recent reports pinpoint financial gain as a primary motivator for 76% of attacks in this sector.

Decoding Akira’s Menace

Founded in 2023, Akira operates under a ransomware-as-a-service model, enhancing their reach through affiliates. Within a short span, they’ve emerged as a formidable cybercrime entity, with victims including Nissan and Stanford University. Renowned for both their ransoms and data leaks, Akira demands hefty payments, demonstrating no hesitation to release data if ignored.

Akira’s name is inspired by a famed Japanese manga, but their influence is very real, earning them advisories from global law enforcement.
