Singapore Unveils S$37B Quantum Tech Investment Through RIE 2030
Singapore’s Bold Move in Quantum Technology
In an ambitious leap towards tech supremacy, Singapore unveiled the RIE 2030 initiative, earmarking a substantial S$37 billion (around US$29.3 billion) for quantum technology and other cutting-edge fields. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong made this announcement during the Budget 2026 speech on February 12. This plan reflects a strategic increase of 32% from the previous RIE 2025 budget. Remarkably, it maintains research funding at about 1% of the GDP. Emphasizing quantum technology as pivotal for Singapore’s future, Wong noted how quickly it’s evolving from mere theory to real-world applications.
Introducing Helios: A Quantum Leap
An exciting component of this initiative is Singapore’s collaboration with Quantinuum. The country will host Helios, the firm’s most advanced quantum computing system based on sophisticated trapped-ion technology. Slated for installation by late 2026, this project is a joint venture with Singapore’s National Quantum Office. Helios promises to bolster local industries like finance, pharmaceuticals, and materials science by providing top-tier quantum computing resources, empowering researchers and startups.
Partnering with Qolab and John Martinis
Further bolstering its quantum pursuits, Singapore will partner with Qolab, co-founded by Nobel laureate John Martinis. With Singapore’s well-established semiconductor and packaging prowess, this partnership aims to innovate in superconducting qubit components. By blending hardware skills with cutting-edge quantum research, Singapore seeks to master the complexities of scaling and coherence in superconducting systems.
