India Secures 108-Qubit Quantum Computer: A Quantum Leap Forward
India’s Quantum Computing Leap
Rigetti Computing is making waves as India’s Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) secures a 108-qubit quantum computer for local use. This move underscores India’s push to boost its position in the quantum realm, complementing efforts in hardware, policy, and infrastructure.
Throughout 2025, India’s dedication to quantum technology gained momentum, fueled by international partnerships and early tech deployments. A pivotal government-sponsored quantum roadmap was unveiled in November 2025, marking quantum computing as a crucial part of India’s technological and economic landscape.
Setting the Stage for Global Leadership
Shri B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, emphasized that the coming years will determine India’s status in the global quantum tech arena. Leveraging its vast talent pool and digital infrastructure, India aims to build a powerful quantum ecosystem.
Since 2023, India’s focus on quantum technology has been driven by the National Quantum Mission (NQM) with a hefty budget of INR 6,003.65 crore (around $730 million). Running until 2031 under the Department of Science and Technology, it spans quantum communications and sensing.
Collaborative Hubs and Innovations
The government has set up thematic hubs, or T-Hubs, to encourage collaboration among educational institutions, research centers, and industries. The Foundation for Quantum Computing Innovation at IISc Bengaluru focuses on quantum research.
Under NQM, plans for quantum fabrication facilities aim to boost the nation’s hardware capabilities. Homegrown projects like Bengaluru’s QpiAI, with its 25-qubit Indus system, exemplify India’s burgeoning domestic innovation.
Strategic Partnerships and Future Prospects
State initiatives, like Andhra Pradesh’s Quantum Valley, and partnerships with giants like IBM and Tata Consultancy Services further highlight India’s ambitions. C-DAC, in collaboration with Rigetti, plans to integrate a 108-qubit quantum computer into its research framework by late 2026, marking a significant stride in its technological journey.
This collaboration not only represents India’s growing independence from international tech reliance but also showcases its dedication to fostering domestic innovation. Stay tuned for more on India’s quantum technology advancements.
