Revolutionary Low-Noise Amplifier Boosts Quantum Computer Scalability
Breakthrough in Quantum Computing Amplifiers
Researchers at RIKEN have made a substantial leap for quantum computing by developing a cutting-edge low-noise, high-gain amplifier. This innovation centers around a microwave photonic circuit device, known as a Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifier (JTWPA). It’s anticipated to propel the capabilities of superconducting quantum computers, particularly systems operating around 100 qubits.
Quantum computing fuses advanced research with sophisticated engineering, allowing manipulation of light at fundamental quantum levels. At its core are qubits—essential elements for quantum calculations. Accurate qubit readings, however, are often hindered by noise and interference, complicating the extraction of useful information.
Overcoming Noise Challenges
For effective qubit measurement, readouts must be swift with a high signal-to-noise ratio. They should support multiple frequencies to facilitate simultaneous qubit readings. Prior amplifiers, leveraging arrays of Josephson junctions, often grappled with noise issues—a challenge this study aims to tackle.
Sandbo Chang and the RIKEN team have addressed this persistent noise problem. Amplifying signals introduces noise, dictated by quantum mechanics, but their novel waveguide design has reduced noise to just 0.68 quanta, near the theoretical limit. Their approach highlights the elimination of noisy materials, replacing them with a unique spiraled, fishbone-like waveguide structure.
The fabrication process is designed for widespread replicability, enhancing accessibility for facilities already producing superconducting qubits. This breakthrough paints a promising future for quantum computing, paving new pathways for research and development.
