IonQ Acquires Skyloom: Boosting Quantum Networking with Advanced Optical Tech

Last Updated: January 30, 2026By

IonQ’s Strategic Move with Skyloom Acquisition

IonQ, a known player in the quantum computing space, has taken a significant leap forward by acquiring Skyloom Global Corp. This isn’t just another acquisition; it’s a strategized enhancement of IonQ’s capabilities in quantum networking. By bringing in Skyloom’s expertise in lightwave optics and space-based communications, IonQ aims to build the technology needed for a scalable quantum internet. This merger marks an exciting development completed on January 28, 2026.

The addition of Skyloom complements IonQ’s existing Quantum Infrastructure division. Thanks to Skyloom’s sophisticated optical communication terminals, validated by the Space Development Agency, IonQ can now push past traditional radio frequencies with multi-Gbps laser communication. This is crucial for connecting isolated quantum processors, enabling a seamless computational network across long distances.

Strengthening Quantum Infrastructure

Positioning itself as a quantum-security leader, IonQ’s acquisition of Skyloom is a strategic boon. By absorbing Skyloom’s technology, IonQ targets a notable reduction in space-to-ground quantum communication latency, aiming for improvements from hours to less than an hour. This aligns effortlessly with their aspiration to enhance data throughput significantly, as much as 500%.

Skyloom will continue under CEO Marc Eisenberg, reporting directly to IonQ’s Quantum Infrastructure President, Frank Backes. Their combined effort will drive innovations in quantum networking for aerospace and defense, pushing toward 2-million-qubit systems by 2030.
