Japan-Singapore Partnership Advances Hybrid Quantum-Classical Computing
Japan and Singapore’s Quantum Leap
On March 2, 2026, Japan’s RIKEN Center for Computational Science and Singapore’s National Quantum Computing Hub announced a new collaboration aimed at pushing the boundaries of hybrid quantum-classical computing. This partnership is backed by a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focusing on the creation of crucial software and systems that seamlessly blend classical and quantum computing elements.
With RIKEN’s prowess in high-performance computing and Singapore’s adeptness at hybrid quantum-classical approaches, they plan to harness resources like the renowned Fugaku supercomputer. This effort isn’t just about advancing technology; it’s about fostering international collaboration in quantum science, building on a bilateral memorandum signed earlier in January 2026.
Key Collaboration Focus
The MoU outlines two main goals:
- Hybrid Quantum-HPC Platforms: The teams will focus on developing middleware and system software, essential for managing and integrating quantum and classical computing resources effectively.
- Application Research: A deep dive into potential applications across diverse fields such as quantum chemistry, fluid dynamics, logistics, and optimization strategies.
This alliance is set to accelerate breakthroughs in areas from computational biology to financial modeling, tackling complex tasks with greater computational might.
Dr. Su Yi, Lead Principal Investigator at NQCH, highlighted that this partnership will enhance Singapore’s efforts in hybrid computing research. By merging NQCH’s resources with RIKEN’s high-performance capabilities, the collaboration is expected to unlock new potentials in various application areas.
Announced at the 8th R-CCS International Symposium, held alongside major computing conferences in Osaka, Japan, this partnership is a significant step towards boosting global innovation in quantum science.
