Alice & Bob’s Cat Qubits Set New Quantum Stability Record
Quantum Leap: Alice & Bob’s Breakthrough
Alice & Bob, a French quantum computing startup, is making waves with a stunning achievement in qubit stability—a key element for future quantum systems. They announced that their latest cat qubits have smashed previous records by resisting bit-flip errors for over an hour. This is a monumental leap from their earlier record of 430 seconds on the Boson 4 chip in 2024.
Bit-flips are one of the most disruptive errors in quantum computing. By extending the qubit’s resistance to over 60 minutes, Alice & Bob have tackled a major technological roadblock. This success is built on their innovative Galvanic Cat qubit design, which is used in their advanced Helium 2 chip.
Advancing Quantum Computing with Precision
The CTO of Alice & Bob, Raphael Lescanne, addressed the continuous improvements in their technology, emphasizing that while stability is crucial, it’s just one part of what makes their cat qubits functional. The company made strides through cutting-edge software, experimental tweaks, and refined engineering, pushing bit-flip times beyond the influence of cosmic rays.
Astonishingly, these current breakthroughs demonstrate bit-flip lifetimes between 33 to 60 minutes, with a significant confidence level at a photon count of 11. They even achieved a Z gate operation with 94.2 percent fidelity in a swift 26.5 nanoseconds, a critical advancement for error correction.
Alice & Bob’s progress paves the way for more efficient error-correcting methods, significantly lowering the number of physical qubits required. Looking ahead, Alice & Bob aim to pioneer fault-tolerant systems with 100 logical qubits by 2030, a milestone that seems increasingly attainable with these advancements.
