Numana and Nokia’s Quantum-Safe Network Pilot

In a noteworthy move for digital security, Numana and Nokia Canada, along with local partners, have tested a quantum-safe network, Blueprint 7, on the Kirq platform. This project focuses on protecting critical infrastructure in Canada, including networks used by banks, healthcare, and government sectors.

The tests demonstrated that advanced cryptography, like post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum key distribution (QKD), can integrate smoothly into existing systems, avoiding the need for full replacements. This aligns with Canada’s strategy to shift government systems to post-quantum standards by 2035.

As quantum computing evolves, it threatens traditional security. The Kirq testbed is tackling this risk by validating network architectures that collectively utilize cutting-edge encryption technologies. These advancements are pivotal for building a nationwide quantum-resilient infrastructure.

The tests showed that integrating quantum-safe encryption reduces costs, risks, and technical uncertainties involved in upgrading to withstand quantum attacks. This effort, involving partners like Crypto4A and NowQuantum, solidifies Canada’s position as a leader in quantum communications.

Background on Quantum-Safe Communications

Quantum computers differ from traditional ones as they process using qubits, which can exist in multiple states at once, allowing rapid calculations. To protect sensitive data, sectors must embrace quantum-safe technologies, such as post-quantum cryptography.

Canada launched its National Quantum Strategy in 2023, emphasizing post-quantum security, funded at $360 million. The strategy includes a roadmap for quantum-safe systems by 2035, urging government plans by April 2026.

Efforts like the Canadian Quantum Champions Program, with a $334 million investment, aim to strengthen the national quantum industry. This commitment ensures a secure digital future capable of facing quantum threats.
