EU Invites Input on Quantum-Resistant Digital Security Roadmap
Navigating the Transition to Quantum-Safe Digital Infrastructure
The EU is taking a proactive step with its NIS Cooperation Group, seeking public input on building a quantum-resistant digital infrastructure. This comes as quantum computing progresses, with the potential to upend data security as we know it. To prepare, the EU has unveiled a roadmap to bolster digital resilience and invites a broad range of stakeholders—from infrastructure experts to the general public—to weigh in. This public consultation is open until September 29, with the shared goal of steering Europe towards a future where digital communications are secure from the vulnerabilities introduced by quantum advancements.
By participating, stakeholders can suggest improvements for the roadmap, address industry-specific challenges, or propose solutions for a smoother transition to quantum-resistant technology. Open-source resource recommendations are also welcome, enriching the community-focused approach. It’s important to note that submissions promoting commercial products won’t be considered. The Work Stream team will thoroughly review all feedback, potentially inviting contributors for more detailed discussions. This open dialogue ensures that all voices are heard as Europe navigates these uncharted waters, underscoring the EU’s commitment to inclusive planning and implementation.
Embracing a Quantum Future with Strategic Initiatives
Beyond the roadmap, the European Commission is launching several initiatives to strengthen research and application efforts in quantum technology. The Quantum Europe Research and Innovation Initiative is a collaborative effort across EU Member States, focusing on key sectors. Plans involve setting up a state-of-the-art quantum design facility along with pilot lines for quantum chips, bolstered by up to €50 million in public funding.
Further developments include creating a pilot facility for the European Quantum Internet and expanding the Quantum Competence Clusters throughout the EU. In 2026, the European Quantum Skills Academy is set to launch, preparing a workforce skilled in quantum technology. Additionally, the partnership with the European Space Agency will pave the way for a Quantum Technology Roadmap for Space, aligned with the European Armament Technological Roadmap.
This strategic approach is vital for ensuring that Europe remains competitive and secure as technology evolves. By inviting public participation and fostering collaborative initiatives, the EU is setting a foundation for a resilient quantum-ready digital ecosystem.
