Nevada DOI & DMV Still Impacted by Major Ransomware Attack
Ransomware Disrupts Nevada’s State Agencies
The Nevada Division of Insurance (DOI) and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are grappling with significant disruptions following a ransomware attack. This cyber lapse impacted several state agencies, with the DOI notably confirming that their website remains inactive as of Friday. This ordeal began when signs of trouble emerged on August 24, prompting quick emergency actions.
The DOI praises its dedicated teams for their hard work in these challenging times. They’ve managed to keep phone lines open and restore email communication for various departments, allowing essential services to continue. Furthermore, a page has been set up by the Nevada Department of Business and Industry to provide contact information for affected divisions, aided by the Nevada Office of Emergency Management (OEM) updates.
Steps Toward Recovery
From the dawn of August 24, swift actions were taken by state officials to counter the cyber intrusion, including extensive system recovery efforts, with the FBI and other federal partners actively investigating. While some systems were briefly paused, there’s a careful effort to bring them online again, though initial findings suggest some data extraction occurred.
Interestingly, the DMV has assured users that their data was not compromised, as systems for registrations and in-person services are being brought back. On a broader front, Nevada’s financial systems have reportedly remained unscathed by this attack. As for other tech mishaps, Jaguar Land Rover is facing similar cyber disruptions, and Farmers Insurance disclosed a large-scale breach impacting over a million customers due to a Salesforce-related breach.
