Senator Demands Microsoft Probe After Ascension Ransomware Attack

Last Updated: September 15, 2025By

Senator Calls for Action on Microsoft Cybersecurity

In a strong move towards enhancing cybersecurity, US Senator Ron Wyden has urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Microsoft. He accuses the company of “gross negligence” following a wave of ransomware attacks that targeted healthcare facilities, notably Ascension Healthcare. These breaches revealed vulnerabilities in Microsoft’s software that could potentially compromise national health infrastructure—a serious concern for all stakeholders.

The Gravity of the Cyberattacks

Senator Wyden addressed his concerns directly to FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, stressing the need for accountability. The senator emphasized that Microsoft’s software faults have introduced significant risks, especially given its pervasive use in vital sectors like healthcare. His alarm is compounded by an incident involving a contractor who inadvertently enabled the ransomware via a malicious link encountered on Microsoft’s Bing search engine. This led to unauthorized access to sensitive data due to insecure default settings in Microsoft’s offerings.

Antiquated Security Methods Under Scrutiny

The methods employed by hackers, such as “Kerberoasting,” tapped into outdated encryption protocols like the RC4 algorithm—still utilized by Microsoft despite industry advancements. These vulnerabilities, Wyden argues, highlight Microsoft’s role in potentially enabling these cyberattacks. Although Microsoft has advocated against using RC4, they maintain that eliminating it entirely is tricky as it could disrupt existing customer systems. Meanwhile, they are undertaking steps to minimize its usage gradually.

Concerns are growing about how these cybersecurity issues could force tech giants to reevaluate their strategies. As the probe proceeds, it has the potential to trigger major shifts in how such companies tackle vulnerabilities, especially in critical sectors like healthcare.
