Inotiv Faces Ransomware and Data Breach Incident

Inotiv, a well-known pharmaceutical research company based in West Lafayette, Indiana, has recently faced a significant cybersecurity challenge. On December 9, 2025, news broke about a ransomware attack involving unauthorized data extraction from the company’s systems. Inotiv, which has a workforce of roughly 2,000 employees and generates over $510 million every year, specializes in drug discovery and development. This unexpected event has raised concerns about data security, especially in an industry as critical as pharmaceuticals.

The issue was first detected on August 8, 2025, when the company experienced network access problems leading to business operation disruptions. By December, Inotiv informed the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that they had restored system access and concluded a thorough internal assessment. During the investigation, an unidentified ransomware group was found to have infiltrated Inotiv’s systems between August 5 and 8, compromising sensitive data. This breach potentially affected 9,542 people, including personal and financial data.

Qilin Ransomware Group’s Involvement

Despite the serious nature of this attack, Inotiv reported no direct ransom demands. However, the Qilin ransomware group claimed responsibility, listing the company’s information on their dark web platform. Qilin is recognized for its aggressive operations against healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, previously impacting companies like Synnovis in the UK. It appears that Qilin exfiltrated a substantial 176 GB of data during their attack on Inotiv.

The removal of Inotiv from Qilin’s data leak site suggests a possible ransom settlement, though the company hasn’t confirmed this. As of now, Inotiv is evaluating the attack’s financial implications. Those affected by the breach have been notified and provided with two years of identity theft protection and credit monitoring, a step towards mitigating further risks.
