New Bipartisan Bill Targets Rising Ransomware in Healthcare Sector
New Efforts to Fortify Healthcare Cybersecurity
In a bipartisan move, senators have proposed legislation to boost cybersecurity in healthcare. This new bill targets the weak points exposed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) protocols, aiming to improve the response to cyber threats.
Why now? Well, 2024 was a record year for breaches, with unprecedented numbers of healthcare data compromises, largely due to a major attack on Change Healthcare. This incident alone potentially endangered the sensitive information of over 190 million individuals.
The American Hospital Association (AHA) reported a staggering 444 cybersecurity incidents last year. With 238 ransomware cases among them, and as confirmed by the FBI, it’s high time for the healthcare sector to take these threats seriously.
The 2025 Healthcare Cybersecurity and Resiliency Act
This new piece of legislation, championed by a coalition of bipartisan senators, is set to reshape the landscape. Backed by Sens. Mark Warner, Bill Cassidy, Maggie Hassan, and John Cornyn, the act offers guidance, grants, and training to arm healthcare providers against cyberattacks.
Importantly, it mandates the creation of specific guidelines for rural health facilities, ensuring these often resource-strapped centers are well-prepared. The Government Accountability Office will help oversee how these strategies are rolled out.
The bill also proposes educational upgrades and a public portal for reporting incidents, ensuring transparency and improved response actions. Additionally, it pushes for an update to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), reinforcing the use of modern cybersecurity measures.
Senator Cornyn emphasized, “Patients must have full confidence that their sensitive health information is shielded from cyber threats.” This legislation is a move towards that confidence.
