Everest Ransomware Claims Major Data Breach at Under Armour
Everest Ransomware Group Targets Under Armour
The Everest ransomware group is in the spotlight after reportedly seizing a large amount of Under Armour’s data. According to Have I Been Pwned (HIBP), this breach could potentially affect around 72.7 million customer accounts, linked to a November incident. This breach, if confirmed, compromises sensitive details like names, email addresses, dates of birth, and past purchase records.
Interestingly, Under Armour has yet to comment publicly on these claims. When questions were raised about the incident, the company stayed silent, even as new leaks emerge. On January 18, Everest shared these files on a cybercrime forum, underscoring the severity of what’s at stake.
Legal Action and Everest’s Past Targets
Everest’s ongoing threat extends beyond exposure. They demanded a ransom from Under Armour, warning of further data exposure if ignored. Claims suggest even more personal details might be at risk, including phone numbers, addresses, and loyalty details. This has already prompted a proposed class-action lawsuit by a law firm on behalf of affected customers.
Everest is notorious for its high-profile attacks. Their ambitious operations have previously targeted Collins Aerospace and a Brazilian government-linked entity. More recently, a breach involved Asus through a third-party supplier. Founded in 2020, Everest utilizes tactics like double extortion, but despite this notoriety, they’re not often listed among the most infamous ransomware groups.
