Transitioning to Post-Quantum Cryptography: Roadmap and Urgency

Last Updated: June 4, 2025By

Urgency in Adopting Post-Quantum Cryptography

Quantum computing is advancing rapidly, bringing with it the potential to undermine our current encryption methods. In response, a coalition of tech heavyweights is urging businesses to embrace post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards.

Leading this charge is the Post-Quantum Cryptography Coalition (PQCC), which has introduced a migration roadmap to help organizations adapt to these new security demands. Wen Masters, from MITRE, emphasizes the urgency: the window to prepare for quantum breakthroughs is closing.

Recently published findings revealed a breakthrough in quantum resources, showing a drastically reduced effort needed to crack widely used RSA-2048 encryption keys. It’s a wake-up call, backed by tech giants such as IBM and Microsoft, to start the PQC transition now.

Understanding the Quantum Threat

Craig Gidney from Google Quantum AI has shed light on how swiftly quantum tech is progressing. He revised previous forecasts, noting that breaking RSA-2048 encryption might take under a week with just under a million qubits, a significant improvement over earlier estimates.

Current quantum machines remain limited, but the urgency to pivot to PQC is underscored by standards from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Their goal: nationwide PQC adoption by 2035.

PQC Migration: Four Essential Stages

  • Preparation: Align organizational goals and designate leadership for the PQC shift.
  • Baseline Understanding: Map out data assets and set migration priorities.
  • Planning and Execution: Collaborate with vendors and ensure solutions are in place.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Track progress and tweak strategies as quantum capabilities grow.

The roadmap emphasizes collaboration, foresight, and ongoing assessment as keys to successfully navigating this complex transition to security in a quantum future.
