G7 Sets 2034 Deadline: Ensure Financial Quantum Security Now

G7 Sets 2034 Deadline for Quantum Security

The G7 has made a pivotal move to enhance cybersecurity by setting a 2034 deadline for financial institutions to adopt post-quantum cryptography (PQC). This stems from a roadmap designed by the G7 Cyber Expert Group, which aims to help businesses identify system vulnerabilities before quantum computing becomes a tangible threat.

This advisory underscores the importance of moving towards PQC. Traditional security might not hold up against advanced quantum attacks, so financial sectors are encouraged to evaluate their cybersecurity frameworks sooner rather than later. The roadmap, while not a regulation, suggests that cybersecurity leaders create action plans to embed PQC across technological offerings.

Steps Towards Quantum Security Adoption

The roadmap begins with an awareness and preparation phase. Firms need to understand quantum vulnerabilities and pinpoint their most sensitive data. From 2026 to 2028, companies will engage in discovery and inventory processes, mapping out network and third-party relationships to find security gaps.

Between 2027 and 2034, firms will implement quantum-resistant technologies, focusing first on vital systems. G7 warns that as quantum tech evolves, these timelines might need acceleration, akin to rapid AI developments.

Onward to Quantum-Ready Systems

Post-implementation, an evaluation phase extends to 2035, pushing for continuous monitoring and compliance. Although 2034 seems far off, achieving cybersecurity goals requires industry-wide dedication. The unpredictability of quantum computing calls for adaptable timelines, guiding organizations toward proactive planning.

Reports highlight many businesses are already advancing towards PQC, driven by the impending “Q-Day” — when existing cryptographic systems might falter. A Capgemini study noted two-thirds of firms view quantum computing as a notable threat, with 86% of banks seeking quantum security solutions. This urgency is propelled by both regulatory compliance and G7 guidance, ensuring timely PQC adoption.
