MTN Unveils Nigeria’s Largest Modular Data Centre for AI and Cloud
MTN’s Bold Move in Nigeria’s Digital Scene
In an exciting development, MTN is making a landmark investment of over $240 million in a new data hub in Ikeja, Nigeria. This state-of-the-art facility is set to honor former CEO Sifiso Dabengwa and will feature an impressive 9 megawatts (MW) capacity, developed over two phases. The initial 4.5MW phase, costing approximately $120 million, will incorporate advanced cloud infrastructure. This ambitious project underscores MTN’s commitment to shaping Nigeria’s digital future.
Pioneering AI and Data Protection
According to MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Dr. Karl Toriola, the new data center will be Nigeria’s largest modular facility, integrating 96 prefabricated containers and supporting around 1,500 racks. This initiative not only enhances the nation’s AI capabilities but also strengthens Nigeria’s data sovereignty by hosting information securely within national borders. MTN is working closely with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission to ensure compliance, enhancing local data hosting options for businesses.
User-Centric Cloud Solutions
MTN Nigeria’s Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Lynda Saint-Nwafor, detailed the financial commitment, revealing a $120 million investment for infrastructure and cloud services. The self-orchestrating data platform aims to offer a user-friendly experience, challenging major players like Google and Amazon. Moreover, the centre is equipped to handle substantial data demands from sectors like fintech and government, supported by robust backup systems to ensure seamless operations.
