Airbus Drives European Data Sovereignty with New Cloud Strategy
Airbus Seeks European Cloud Independence
Airbus, a leader in aerospace manufacturing, is making bold moves to establish a cloud computing framework free from American tech influence. By January, Airbus will begin seeking partners to help maintain data sovereignty in Europe. This isn’t just about Airbus; it’s a pioneering step to reshape the way the region approaches digital infrastructure.
The plan involves €50 million (around $52 million) to transfer crucial assets like aircraft design and production systems to European cloud services. This decision comes at a time when companies question their dependency on US technology, especially after Microsoft revealed its limitations in protecting European data from US law under the 2018 CLOUD Act.
Catherine Jestin, Airbus’s digital lead, underscores the importance of ensuring sensitive information stays within European borders. The quest for a homegrown solution is a response to growing concerns over data security and autonomy.
Challenges in Building European Cloud Strength
Currently, Airbus uses Google Workspace software but aims to shift major operations away from American platforms. Despite European cloud ventures, Airbus sees only an 80% chance of finding a capable provider to match its complex needs.
Geopolitical tensions, notably with Donald Trump’s re-election, have added urgency to these efforts. As Jestin notes, Airbus seeks clarity on regulations to avoid data being scooped up under US laws.
The upcoming 10-year contract with a European provider could set a precedent for others to follow, testing whether Europe can rival giants like Amazon and Microsoft in the cloud arena. Success could bolster trust in European tech, while failure may tighten the grip of US infrastructures on global markets.
