Data Sovereignty Concerns Among UK and Irish SMEs

Recent findings highlight growing concerns among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK and Ireland about where their data is stored. A study by team.blue found that many of these businesses are unclear on how data location influences their operations. The “UK & Ireland Data Hosting Report” surveyed 450 SMEs and noted key differences in the factors driving these worries. In the UK, 61% of SMEs are anxious about data storage locations, compared to 45% in Ireland. These concerns are shaped by post-Brexit regulations and regional laws.

Legislative Impacts Post-Brexit

In the UK, data sovereignty fears have risen due to legislative changes post-Brexit, such as the Data (Use and Access) Act of 2025. These emphasize data sovereignty within the UK’s digital economy strategy. In Ireland, businesses are preparing to adapt to the EU Data Act, taking effect in September 2025. This act is expected to impact operational practices and global data management standards. However, 68% of Irish SMEs remain uncertain about their data’s location, posing potential compliance issues.

Transatlantic Data Concerns

The report revealed that 73% of SMEs fear data storage in the United States, fueled by debates over transatlantic data transfers and the Cloud Act. Internal and external pressures are driving this scrutiny, with company executives and customers increasingly voicing concerns. This highlights the rising importance of data sovereignty on boardroom agendas.

Hesitance in Changing Providers

Despite heightened awareness, many UK and Irish SMEs are hesitant to switch data hosting providers, with significant portions undecided or uninterested in transitioning. This reflects a need for clearer guidance. Experts emphasize that understanding data sovereignty can set businesses apart in the marketplace and protect against compliance and reputational risks.

The Importance of Education and Transparency

Expert voices like Eamon Kelly stress that SMEs face challenges balancing global service efficiency with local oversight demands. The EU Data Act demands more transparency and access, underscoring the need for education. Providing resources and clarity will empower SMEs to navigate the digital landscape confidently.
