Why Data Sovereignty Matters for European SMEs in 2024
European SMEs Seek Greater Data Control
Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Europe are rethinking their data hosting strategies. According to a recent report by digital service provider team.blue, there’s been a noticeable shift in how these businesses view the management and storage of their data. The study, titled “Data Hosting In Europe: Insights & Shift,” offers a deep dive into the concerns and motivations of SMEs across varied sectors.
The findings reveal a widespread uncertainty among these companies, with 57% unsure if their cloud providers keep data within EU borders. An increasing number, about 51%, are now more focused on their data’s location due to stakeholder pressure from customers and executives alike.
Navigating Concerns and Creating Solutions
Apprehension about hosting data in the U.S. is evident, as 72% of SMEs express discomfort with this idea. As many as 21% are contemplating switching providers due to geopolitical and economic uncertainties that impact where data is stored.
team.blue stands as a key player in the market, serving 32.1% of these businesses, with Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure trailing behind. There’s also a considerable number of SMEs opting for self-managed solutions, indicating a desire for more control over data.
Kwaku Yeboah-Antwi, team.blue’s Chief AI and Data Officer, noted that this movement is driven by both a need for trust and the strategic advantage that robust digital sovereignty provides. CEO Claudio Corbetta emphasized the potential for integrated digital environments where businesses can seamlessly access all necessary services, marking a new era for Europe’s digital landscape.
