Data Sovereignty in Cloud Migration: Telekom & Google Cloud Case Study
Deutsche Telekom Partners with Google Cloud
Deutsche Telekom (DT), in a bold move toward modernization, has joined forces with Google Cloud to overhaul its aged telecommunications data systems. By shifting more than 40 legacy systems into a sophisticated, cloud-native framework, DT aims to forge a unified, AI-ready data ecosystem while adhering to strict data sovereignty rules.
Ashutosh Mishra, DT’s Vice President of Data Architecture and Governance, describes the existing landscape as a “spaghetti mess” of disconnected systems, each maintaining its own data lakes. This tangled architecture has led to inefficiencies and vague cost assessments.
The strategic partnership, set to run through 2030, targets enhanced telecommunications services through IT and application modernization. Mishra highlights the enormous scope, emphasizing the platform’s construction within Google Cloud’s Data Boundary, hinting at a transformation in DT’s operational landscape.
Tackling Compliance and Efficiency
Addressing compliance challenges posed by data rich in sensitive information, DT leverages Google Cloud’s sovereign offerings to manage encryption independently, ensuring data remains domestically bound per GDPR and German laws. This approach integrates highest standard security with format-preserving encryption to maintain data utility.
The transition involves an inventive pseudonymization framework that handles real-time data processing, minimizing prior preprocessing needs. DT’s choice of Apache Iceberg ensures consistent data truth for diverse analytical languages, like Python and SQL. Impressively, within six months, DT has already assimilated over 200 systems, with analytics processes seeing drastic efficiency leaps.
DT is also redefining its operational strategy by employing a GitLab CI/CD pipeline. This not only reduces reliance on costly onsite infrastructure but also expands analytics within the cloud, paving the way for forthcoming AI initiatives. As Mishra warns, setting a solid data foundation now is crucial, even if full functionality isn’t immediately attainable.
In summary, Deutsche Telekom’s collaboration with Google Cloud marks a significant leap forward in telecommunications data management, paving the way for upgraded operations and AI integrations industry-wide.
