Ensuring Data Sovereignty with Starlink in Bangladesh

In recent developments, Starlink’s launch in Bangladesh promises not just advanced internet access but also preserves the nation’s data sovereignty. Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, the Special Assistant at the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, assured that Starlink will remain compliant with local data privacy laws. Speaking from the Foreign Service Academy, he emphasized that local gateways would be pivotal in keeping all data within Bangladesh’s borders.

It’s clear that the green light for Starlink wasn’t rushed. Every step of the regulatory process was meticulously adhered to, ensuring that everything is well above board. Interestingly, Starlink has agreed to a nominal fee per device, reinforcing its commitment to Bangladesh’s economy.

Improved Internet Access and Flexible Pricing

Initially, Starlink’s pricing was steep at Tk 7,000 monthly. However, negotiations have paid off, reducing costs to Tk 6,000 or Tk 4,200, depending on the package. While there’s a one-time installation fee of Tk 47,000, the promise of high-speed internet reaching 300 Mbps makes for a compelling offer, especially for areas lacking reliable connectivity.

Additionally, Taiyeb calls the license issuance for Starlink in just 90 days a landmark victory in telecommunications. He also mentioned developing financial packages to make Starlink more accessible for those involved in citizen services. Importantly, this endeavor won’t disrupt existing broadband efforts, maintaining harmony with current internet service providers.
