Asahi Group Unveils Data Breach After Cyberattack

Asahi Group Holdings recently disclosed a significant data breach stemming from a ransomware attack last September. This incident exposed 115,513 personal data records, affecting both clients and employees. The majority, a substantial 110,396 records, contained names and contact details of client firm executives and staff. Unfortunately, 5,117 records revealed names and addresses of Asahi Group employees, including former staff members.

Back in November, Asahi initially reported that only 18 records were confirmed compromised, estimating at the time that as many as 1.9 million records could potentially be at risk. This latest update provides a clearer but still concerning picture of the breach’s scale.

Asahi’s Response and Recovery Efforts

In response to this unsettling breach, Asahi has put in place a series of measures to safeguard against future incidents. These steps include:

  • Enhanced surveillance: Upgraded systems to detect and stop suspicious activities.
  • Security overhaul: Creation of an internal security team.
  • Leadership: Appointment of a senior executive focused on data protection.
  • Employee training: Expanded cybersecurity training programs.

The breach also caused operational disruptions, halting production and shipments in several domestic facilities. However, recovery efforts have made notable progress, with logistics returning to normalcy by now. This incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures in today’s digital age.
