Askul Data Breach: Russian Ransomware Attack Hits Japanese Retailer
Japanese Retail Giant Askul Faces Data Breach
In a concerning note for the world of cybersecurity, Japanese retailer Askul has publicly announced a data breach. This breach followed a ransomware attack in October, linked to a group suspected to be connected to Russia. Askul, known for office and household items, revealed the breach has disrupted its e-commerce operations significantly.
The attackers accessed sensitive user data, including customer contact information and supplier details from platforms like Askul, Lohaco, and Soloel Arena. Understandably, this has caused distress among their customers and business partners, for which Askul has issued a heartfelt apology.
Impact Beyond Askul
The ramifications of this breach extend beyond Askul, affecting key players in the Japanese retail world. Notable companies like Ryohin Keikaku, owner of the Muji brand, and The Loft, both reliant on Askul’s logistics, experienced supply chain disruptions. However, these companies have not confirmed if their data was directly compromised.
The group claiming responsibility, RansomHouse, insists it extracted 1.1 terabytes of data. This group, operational since March 2022, is known for threatening to publish data rather than encrypt it, a tactic to expose vulnerabilities rather than harm users directly. Their connections to notorious Russia-aligned groups like Alphv/BlackCat and LockBit 3.0 add layers to this complex issue.
For anyone keeping tabs on cybersecurity developments, these instances highlight the increasing frequency of cyberattacks on Japanese enterprises, echoing recent incidents like those affecting Asahi Group Holdings and TEIN.
