Nevada State Agency Ransomware Attack Exposes Security Gaps

Last Updated: November 9, 2025By

The Ransomware Incident

In August, Nevada’s state government found itself embroiled in a significant ransomware attack, stemming from a malware download by a state employee. This occurred when malware from a fake website made its way into government systems. The malicious software cleverly bypassed security through search engine manipulation and Google advertising.

Once executed, the cyber intruder gained formidable control, deleting backups and encrypting key systems. Though the attack was detected on August 24th, the breach had begun back in May. By the time the state’s security tools flagged it in June, the damage was largely done, with the attacker setting up a backdoor for ongoing access.

Response and Recovery

The malware allowed the intruder to pilfer credentials, creating encrypted pathways within the network and accessing sensitive areas. Thankfully, out of 26,000 files breached, only one document with personal data was at risk. The state’s determined response saw a rapid data recovery of about 90% despite widespread disruption.

Recovery efforts came at a price—$1.3 million—with the state hoping its $7 million cyber insurance will soften the financial blow. State employees went beyond the call of duty, clocking over 4,200 overtime hours to unravel the attack’s impact. Their readiness showcased the effectiveness of the state’s incident response plan.

Sitewide cybersecurity improvements are underway, including a new operations center and expanded training powered by partnerships with tech giants like Microsoft. With federal support boosting these initiatives, Nevada aims to bolster its defenses against future threats.
