How Data Sovereignty Is Shaping Sustainable Data Centers

Last Updated: November 10, 2025By

Lenovo and its research partner Opinium have conducted a fascinating study highlighting the sustainability challenges facing data centers today. An eye-opening insight is that half of IT leaders acknowledge their data centers aren’t hitting energy or carbon reduction targets. This underscores the urgent need for data centers, particularly in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), to evolve with growing AI demands and stricter regulations.

Simone Larsson from Lenovo notes the future of data centers lies in scaling for AI, achieving sustainability goals, and maximizing energy efficiency. Current designs are falling short, with only 46% of IT decision-makers feeling their setups meet sustainability objectives, despite 92% prioritizing energy reduction. Advanced solutions, like Lenovo’s Neptune liquid cooling, are essential, capable of extracting 98% of system heat at the source.

Data sovereignty is also a hot topic, with 99% of leaders in agreement on its critical nature due to regional compliance requirements. As edge computing rises, low latency is vital. This is pushing data centers toward decentralized systems near operational hubs to meet real-time application needs.

AI is transforming data usage, with 90% of IT leaders expecting a data consumption boom over the next decade. However, there’s a readiness gap, as 41% admit their current infrastructure can’t handle AI technologies at scale. Lenovo’s innovative approaches, like repurposing old spaces for data centers, focus on sustainable and efficient designs rather than just expanding size.

Looking ahead to 2055, Lenovo is working with engineering firm AKT II and Mamou-Mani studio on futuristic data center designs. These concepts go beyond traditional models, utilizing natural resources and unique settings. Ideas include The Floating Cloud, harnessing solar power; The Data Village, using natural water for cooling and community services; and The Data Center Bunker, capitalizing on underground spaces for efficiency and security.

Lenovo’s Neptune liquid cooling exemplifies a shift towards sustainable infrastructure. Offering significant energy savings and supported by numerous awards, Neptune is leading the way in helping businesses manage AI’s growing energy demands. As Lenovo’s Simone Larsson puts it, the journey towards smarter, greener data centers requires embracing sustainability right from the start.
