Empowering Navajo Nation with a Sovereign Missing Persons Database
New Database for Missing Diné Relatives
The Missing and Murdered Diné Relatives (MMDR) Task Force has partnered with Navajo Technical University (NTU) to create a sovereign database. Under the guidance of database expert Dr. Gil Gonzales, this initiative focuses on resolving missing persons cases within the Navajo Nation. The meeting on September 30 showcased the development of this ambitious project.
This database is designed to improve data accessibility and accountability. In the words of Task Force Chairwoman Amber Kanazbah Crotty, “Families deserve a transparent system that prioritizes their voices and honors their lost loved ones.” The aim is to connect families and agencies with real-time updates and communication.
Empowering the Community with Technology
Dr. Gonzales presented the framework for a platform equipped with advocacy tools, communication features, and survey capabilities. Highlights include a customer relationship management module and data-sharing interface, key for collaboration. Built with open-source architecture, the database ensures accessibility in rural regions, even on mobile devices.
NTU plans to host the database on tribal servers to maintain data sovereignty. Beyond technical development, there’s a push to train NTU students in related skills. “The goal is to build local capacity and create something sustainable,” says Chairwoman Crotty.
Jurisdictional hurdles often stall data access. The MMDR database aims to provide timely alerts even before law enforcement records catch up. Future discussions may integrate AI for tracking patterns. The first prototype is underway, and NTU is listing jobs to include Diné students.
