Breakthrough in Quantum Computing with IBM Technology

A stellar leap forward in quantum computing has been made by a collaborative team including Quantum Elements, USC’s Center for Quantum Information Science & Technology, IBM, and RWTH Aachen University. They’ve hit a new milestone in fault-tolerant computing by achieving record fidelity in entangled logical qubits. Published in Nature Communications, this research harnessed a 127-qubit superconducting processor from IBM. The team employed an innovative hybrid technique combining Quantum Error Detection (QED) and Normalizer Dynamical Decoupling (NDD). This tackles a tricky challenge in scaling quantum systems: logical errors, especially ZZ crosstalk, which standard methods don’t typically address.

The crux of their innovation lies in implementing NDD with the quantum code’s normalizer elements, such as the [[4, 2, 2]] code, as dynamical decoupling pulses. Unlike conventional techniques that introduce complexity by targeting individual qubits, NDD operates at the logical level. This approach uses logical operations as pulses to suppress both logical and physical errors efficiently. Importantly, it boosts hardware performance without needing more qubits or increased code distance.

The results are impressive: these logical Bell states surpass physical counterparts in fidelity, achieving:

  • Peak Post-Selected Fidelity: Encoded Bell states reached an amazing 98% fidelity, a significant leap from prior benchmarks of 79% to 93% in transmon systems.
  • Long-Duration Stability: Logical Bell state fidelities averaged between 91% and 94% over 55 microseconds.
  • Error Suppression: The protocol effectively reduced logical Z errors from crosstalk, the main error source in the 127-qubit system.
