Enterprises Reconsider AI Workloads: A Shift from Public Cloud

In a new trend shaking up the tech landscape, a recent survey of 203 IT leaders in the enterprise world reveals a decisive pivot in how AI workloads are managed. According to findings shared by Cloudian, 93% of organizations are bringing some AI operations back from public clouds or mulling over this action. Of those surveyed, 79% have already moved workloads, and 73% plan to depend more on on-premises or hybrid setups in the next two years.

Cloudian’s CMO, Jon Toor, highlights that handling sensitive data with predictable costs and real-time performance makes on-premises AI solutions a preferable option to public clouds.

Driving Forces Behind the Shift

  • Data Sovereignty: About 91% prefer private or hybrid models for sensitive data. Also, 74% see unauthorized AI tool use as a security threat, with 58% experiencing delays in AI projects due to data residency worries.
  • Cost Concerns: Nearly 40% report higher-than-expected cloud service expenses. Furthermore, cost unpredictability hampers broader AI use.
  • Performance Needs: Around 75% require on-premises setups to meet latency needs for applications like real-time video analytics.
  • Increasing AI Budgets: With 86% expecting a budget boost, and 40% foreseeing a 25% or more increase, investments in on-premise infrastructure are set to rise.

While public cloud services remain integral, companies are more selective, prioritizing data security, costs, and performance in determining how best to manage AI workloads.
