Google Teams Up with Antel for Cloud Services in Uruguay

Exciting news in the tech world: Google has picked Antel, Uruguay’s own telecommunications powerhouse, to deliver Google Cloud services locally. This collaboration centers around Antel’s Tier III data center at the Pando Industrial Park in Canelones. By using this facility, Google aims to offer distributed cloud services to Uruguayan businesses with a hybrid cloud model.

This partnership was announced on February 25, during a crucial meeting. Key attendees included Uruguay’s Industry Minister Fernanda Cardona, Antel President Alejandro Paz, and Natalia Scaliter of Google Cloud. Together, they outlined how this alliance empowers businesses to handle important workloads using Google Cloud on Antel’s robust platform.

Antel assures its clients that this partnership guarantees data sovereignty, tight security, and low latency, allowing data processing close to where it’s needed, all in a secure environment. The goal is to provide “sovereign hybrid clouds,” which mesh data sovereignty with cutting-edge tech for customer benefit.

Antel’s Expansion and Google’s Strategic Moves

Antel is already a giant in data management, running three data centers, with the Pando site being the largest. Plans include expanding by adding two more centers, one dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI), enhancing its current setup.

Earlier this month, Antel announced an $8 million investment to upgrade the Pando center with high-performance processors for AI functionalities. A new data center in Montevideo is also in the works, meant to provide added service redundancy.

Meanwhile, Google is stepping up its game in Uruguay. It’s building a second data center in Latin America, right inside the same tech park as Antel’s. This $850 million venture is designed to boost AI capabilities, improve connectivity, and provide better cloud services. Emphasizing sustainability, the project incorporates water-efficient cooling and green energy solutions, aligning with Google’s 24/7 carbon-free energy pledge.

The partnership also covers essential infrastructure. Antel aids in linking Google Cloud throughout South America via the Tannat underwater cable and the future Firmina submarine cable, enhancing data transfer and connectivity on the continent.
