Quantum Teleportation Milestone in Berlin

In a remarkable leap for quantum technology, Deutsche Telekom’s T-Labs, together with Qunnect, have successfully conducted quantum teleportation tests over Berlin’s commercial network. This achievement marks a crucial step towards integrating quantum technologies into existing telecommunications infrastructure.

The trials, held in January 2026, achieved quantum teleportation over a 30-kilometer fiber optic network. Utilizing Qunnect’s quantum entanglement gear along with Telekom’s facilities in Berlin, the project evaluated essential components for future teleportation services. Abdu Mudesir of Telekom emphasized that Berlin’s network is now “quantum ready,” able to transmit quantum information with standard data over long distances with 90% accuracy, paving the way for advanced secure communication.

Successful Trials and Future Potential

Qunnect’s CTO, Mael Flament, noted these trials transition quantum teleportation from lab experiments to real-world telecommunications networks. Quantum teleportation could revolutionize secure communications, distributed quantum computing, and foster cloud-based quantum services, leading to the development of quantum data centers.

The process involved transmitting qubits via a 30-kilometer fiber loop, using Qunnect’s Carina platform to produce entangled photons. With noise compensation features enhancing reliability, teleportation fidelities averaged 90%. Conducted at a wavelength suitable for a variety of quantum platforms, this innovation supports future quantum internet connectivity.

This success builds upon past trials, confirming quantum networking capabilities over urban fiber links. Future efforts will focus on multi-node teleportation and extending quantum state transfer distances, advancing applications within metropolitan networks.
