Ransomware Shuts Down Clinics Across Mississippi

Jackson, Mississippi faced a significant disruption when a ransomware attack forced the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) to temporarily close all clinics statewide and postpone elective surgeries. This situation has impacted one of Mississippi’s largest healthcare networks. The shutdown is expected to last several days as officials assess the situation, examining if any sensitive data has been compromised. As a safety measure, certain network systems have been deactivated.

Richard Bell, a patient traveling from Oxford to Jackson for lymphoma treatment, found his appointments canceled. “It was all shut down,” he shared, expressing frustration. The hospital has assured patients needing urgent treatments, like chemotherapy, that they will be contacted to reschedule.

Efforts to Resume Operations Amid Cyberattack

Though clinic operations have halted, UMMC’s hospitals and emergency rooms remain functional, continuing to provide patient care, as noted by the university. Vice Chancellor LouAnn Woodward acknowledged that disrupted systems, including the electronic health records, have forced a return to manual documentation. “Some of us have been here long enough to remember taking care of patients with pen and paper,” she commented.

Investigations are in progress to understand the attackers’ reach into personal information. While Woodward confirmed communication with the hackers, she withheld details about their demands. UMMC is collaborating with the FBI, aiming to swiftly restore medical systems and patient care continuity. FBI Special Agent Robert Eikhoff highlighted the urgency of the situation, but further details remain undisclosed.
