Photonic Inc., based in Vancouver, has hit two major milestones. They’ve secured a crucial investment from Firgun Ventures and successfully achieved a world first in quantum teleportation over a 30-kilometer commercial fiber-optic network. This follows their earlier success in raising $130 million USD through a Series C funding round. This positions Photonic as a leader in developing large-scale quantum networks with their innovative “Entanglement First” approach.

Firgun Ventures, a new fund from London, made this investment as part of their $250 million capital to support early-stage quantum startups. Founded by Dr. Kris Naudts and Zeynep Koruturk, Firgun connects cutting-edge research with commercial chances. Supported by the Qatar Investment Authority, they’ve chosen Photonic for its potential in creating dependable quantum systems, proven by participation in DARPA’s initiatives.

Partnership and Technology Advancements

Photonic, in collaboration with telecommunications giant TELUS, performed an amazing feat by teleporting quantum data over 30 kilometers using TELUS’ PureFibre network. This isn’t your typical disappearing qubit trick—their method allows data to be captured by a silicon-based processor, making it ready for future computations, which is vital for distributed quantum computing.

Their success underscores the power of Photonic’s “Entanglement First™” strategy. Using silicon T-centre qubits, they generate spin-entangled photons without the messy frequency changes. This choice aligns with existing telecom standards, ensuring easy global network integration. With their unique Quantum Low-Density Parity Check codes, Photonic aims for efficient, reliable quantum operations, reducing the usual qubit load of other methods.
