Orange & Cisco Launch Global Post-Quantum Security Services
Orange and Cisco’s Leap into Quantum Security
On February 10, 2026, a significant move unfolded as Orange Business teamed up with Cisco to introduce pioneering security services strengthened by Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC). This collaboration is designed to counter the emerging threats spurred by the advancements in quantum computing.
PQC stands as a safeguard against potential breaches from quantum computers, a groundbreaking technology poised to outmaneuver current encryption standards. Frank De Jong, Program Director of Quantum Safe Networks at Orange, highlighted PQC’s advantages over Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), primarily its freedom from distance restrictions.
PQC in Wide Area Networks
Initially, Orange is rolling out PQC-enhanced Wide Area Network (WAN) offerings utilizing the tried-and-true Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology. There are plans to extend PQC to managed Software-Defined WAN (SD-WAN) services later this year, contingent on Cisco’s updates.
De Jong emphasized the urgency for adopting quantum technologies, marking a shift from the usual wait-and-see strategy found in telecommunications. The need for proactive measures against the quantum threat is paramount, he asserted.
Orange’s Pioneering Steps
This venture follows Orange’s partnership with Toshiba in June to create France’s first commercial quantum-safe network using QKD. While the newly announced PQC services will operate independently, they signify another stride in securing communications over IP networks.
Addressing the limitations of QKD, De Jong pointed out its distance constraints, contrasting it with the more globally deployable and standardized PQC, which is suited for sectors like finance and government, where the quantum threat is most pressing.
Leading the Quantum Charge
Orange’s strategy includes maintaining “crypto agility,” allowing updates to encryption on customer routers to swiftly address vulnerabilities. This adaptability positions Orange as a pioneer, launching the first European PQC services on a global scale with Cisco.
The industry is rapidly embracing quantum solutions, with over 35 telecom companies exploring such technologies. As De Jong forecasts, demand for PQC services will soar, becoming a crucial component of telecom systems globally.
