Marquis Data Breach Exposes Risks of SonicWall Firewall Ransomware

Last Updated: February 3, 2026By

Marquis and the SonicWall Breach

Fintech company Marquis has focused on recouping losses from SonicWall after a recent data breach exposed sensitive customer information. Marquis linked the incident to a ransomware attack in August 2025, tracing it back to a previous security failure at SonicWall. The breach compromised firewall configurations, providing hackers with the credentials needed to access Marquis’s systems.

The ramifications of this breach are concerning. A third-party investigation discovered that hackers accessed firewall details stored in SonicWall’s cloud, allowing them to bypass security measures. Marquis revealed it kept a backup of its firewall settings within SonicWall’s cloud environment, thus vulnerable to the breach.

Seeking Compensation and Ongoing Investigations

A representative for Marquis, Hanna Grimm, asserted the connection between the company’s breach and the earlier SonicWall incident. “Following the September 2025 security incident, our provider reported a prior intrusion affecting numerous customers,” Grimm noted.

SonicWall’s Bret Fitzgerald responded, requesting more evidence from Marquis to substantiate the claims. He mentioned that SonicWall had not confirmed a connection between earlier breaches and current ransomware attacks. While Marquis continues to notify affected banks and credit unions, the details regarding the compromised personal and financial data remain undisclosed.

SonicWall admitted all cloud backup users were impacted, contradicting initial reports of a minor breach. Marquis investigated if a missed security update contributed but found the vulnerability was not exploitable.
