Ransomware Surge of 58% in 2025

2025 was a record-setting year for ransomware, with a 58% rise in incidents. According to GuidePoint Security, ransomware attacks surged, affecting 2,287 unique victims in the last quarter alone. December was notably severe, with attacks increasing by 42%, hitting 814 in just one month.

Despite efforts by law enforcement to dismantle major ransomware groups, smaller entities quickly filled the gap. The report tracked 124 distinct groups, highlighting a 46% increase from the previous year. Key targets included the United States, Canada, and sectors like manufacturing, technology, and retail.

Notably, the Qilin group heavily targeted healthcare, expanding its reach significantly. Sinobi, a newer group, accelerated its activities, seeing rapid growth. Emerging trends suggest cybercriminals may soon leverage AI to enhance attacks, urging 2026 to demand improved security measures.
