LANL Powers Next-Gen Quantum-Classical Computing Innovation
Quantum Science Center’s Vision Gains Momentum
The U.S. Department of Energy has renewed its commitment to the Quantum Science Center with a robust $125 million funding over the next five years. This investment aims to push the envelope in quantum-accelerated high-performance computing. Los Alamos National Laboratory, or LANL, will remain a pivotal collaborator alongside the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, both working to fuel advancements in this transformative technology.
The center spearheaded by Oak Ridge, along with several partners, focuses on building a reliable framework for fault-tolerant quantum-classical computing under the supervision of the DOE’s Office of Science. LANL’s role is crucial as they drive the development of open-source quantum software and hybrid algorithms, paving the way for novel scientific applications in quantum simulations and materials modeling.
Charting New Territories in Quantum and Hybrid Computing
As Mark Chadwick, LANL’s associate Laboratory director, put it, the Quantum Science Center is at the forefront of bridging quantum with high-performance computing, boosting advancements in both research and national security. The collaboration sees three national laboratories, including LANL—as a main player—working with various academic and industry partners to foster a quantum-enabled scientific community.
The center aims to build groundbreaking open-source software for seamless quantum-classical interactions. LANL scientists like Scott Pakin and Yigit Subasi are leading efforts in hybrid algorithms and quantum simulations, alongside Andrew Sornborger’s focus on modeling quantum materials. Ellen Cerreta, another key figure, emphasized LANL’s high-level capability to turn quantum computing potential into practical solutions, particularly in discovering new quantum materials.
