Airbus Drives Data Sovereignty: European Cloud Shift for Security

Last Updated: December 31, 2025By

Airbus’s Shift Away from Google’s Cloud Services

In a significant move, Airbus has decided to transition away from Google’s cloud services, citing concerns over data sovereignty and security. This decision highlights Europe’s growing skepticism towards American tech dominance. At the core is the anxiety around US data jurisdiction laws, like the CLOUD Act, which potentially allows American authorities to access data stored internationally.

For Airbus, deeply intertwined with industrial, defense, and national security sectors, this legal exposure is becoming increasingly intolerable. It underscores a notable shift in attitude as Airbus seeks to safeguard sensitive data from US oversight. Meanwhile, Google’s legal challenges in a class-action lawsuit concerning privacy violations with its AI assistant, Gemini, compounds these concerns about how US firms manage user data.

Airbus’s Plan for a Digitally Sovereign Future

While not directly tied to Google’s current legal woes, Airbus’s timing in launching a tender for a “digitally sovereign” European cloud provider is noteworthy. Estimated to cost over €50 million, this project aims to secure Airbus’s critical workloads. The end goal is to phase out reliance on US cloud services by summer next year, covering integral operations from aircraft design to data management.

Yet, the European tech landscape poses a challenge. As Catherine Jestin, Airbus’s executive VP of digital, articulates, they need a partner capable of meeting stringent technical and legal demands—a daunting task with only an 80% success prediction. This strategic move by Airbus not only aims to protect its sensitive data but also urges an investment in domestic cloud capabilities amid geopolitical uncertainties.
